What We're Looking For

We need an experienced Senior Fractional DBA with deep expertise across both SQL Server and PostgreSQL to provide flexible, on\-demand database administration, optimization, and architecture support for our consulting engagements. You'll work across client environments—tuning performance, hardening security, planning migrations, and ensuring high availability for mission\-critical databases. This role is a corp\-to\-corp, 1099 engagement with a fractional/flexible structure. If you're a battle\-tested DBA who also embraces AI\-forward delivery practices, we'd love to talk.

Key Requirements

• 10\+ Years in Database Administration
• Production DBA experience across enterprise environments with both SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Deep understanding of database internals, query optimization, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis.
• Proven track record managing databases at scale—terabyte\-class or larger.
• SQL Server Expertise
• SQL Server 2016\+ (through SQL Server 2022\): installation, configuration, patching, and upgrade planning.
• Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering, log shipping, and disaster recovery design.
• Performance tuning: Query Store, extended events, wait statistics analysis, index management, and tempdb optimization.
• SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS experience is a plus.
• SQL Server on Azure VMs, Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
• PostgreSQL Expertise
• PostgreSQL 13\+ administration: installation, configuration (postgresql.conf, pg\_hba.conf), and version upgrades.
• Replication: streaming replication, logical replication, and high\-availability patterns (Patroni, pgBouncer, or similar).
• Performance tuning: EXPLAIN/ANALYZE, pg\_stat\_statements, vacuum tuning, partitioning, and connection pooling.
• Extensions ecosystem: pgvector, PostGIS, pg\_cron, pg\_partman, and others as needed.
• Azure Database for PostgreSQL (Flexible Server) and/or AWS RDS for PostgreSQL.
• Database Security \& Compliance
• Encryption at rest and in transit (TDE, SSL/TLS), role\-based access control, and audit logging.
• HIPAA/PHI data handling: understanding of regulatory requirements for protected health information in database environments.
• Data masking, row\-level security, and secure backup/restore procedures.
• High Availability \& Disaster Recovery
• Designing and implementing HA/DR strategies across both SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Backup and recovery planning: RPO/RTO definition, automated backup validation, and disaster recovery testing.
• Experience with cross\-region replication and geo\-redundant architectures.
• Cloud \& Infrastructure
• Azure is our primary cloud—experience with Azure SQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Azure VMs, and Azure networking for database workloads.
• Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or Bicep for database infrastructure provisioning.
• Azure DevOps and/or GitHub for CI/CD of database changes (migrations, schema management).
• Monitoring: Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Grafana, or similar observability tooling for database health.
• AI\-Forward Database Administration
• Daily practitioner with AI coding tools and agents: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot, Cursor (or similar).
• Using AI to accelerate query optimization, generate migration scripts, automate runbook creation, and analyze performance diagnostics.
• Familiarity with pgvector or Azure AI Search for vector storage and retrieval workloads.
• Safety/compliance: ensuring AI\-assisted database changes are reviewed, tested, and compliant with data governance policies.
• Healthcare Domain (Strongly Preferred)
• Experience in healthcare, health insurance, pharmacy, or related industries.
• Understanding of HIPAA, PHI handling, and regulatory requirements in database environments.
• Familiarity with healthcare data models (claims, eligibility, clinical, pharmacy).

What You'll Do

• Optimize \& Tune: Analyze and resolve performance issues across SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments—query tuning, index optimization, resource contention, and configuration adjustments.
• Architect \& Design: Design high\-availability, disaster recovery, and scaling strategies for mission\-critical database workloads.
• Migrate \& Upgrade: Plan and execute database migrations (on\-prem to cloud, version upgrades, SQL Server to PostgreSQL or vice versa) with minimal downtime.
• Secure \& Harden: Implement database security best practices including encryption, access controls, audit logging, and HIPAA\-compliant data handling.
• Monitor \& Automate: Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and automated maintenance routines (backups, index rebuilds, vacuum tuning, health checks).
• Deliver with AI: Leverage AI tools to accelerate diagnostics, script generation, documentation, and runbook automation.
• Client Engagement: Partner with development teams and stakeholders to advise on schema design, data access patterns, and database architecture decisions.
