About This Role
Fractional Controller – Construction Accounting
Part\-Time / Fractional • Remote
We are a fast\-growing, service\-based construction company seeking a Fractional Controller to bring structure, rigor, and scalability to our accounting function as we continue to grow. This is a hands\-on strategic oversight role, not a full\-time operator position. You will partner closely with an existing bookkeeper—providing guidance, improving processes, and ensuring financial accuracy—while building a foundation that is clean, consistent, and audit\-ready. The ideal candidate brings deep construction accounting expertise, a strong eye for process improvement, and the ability to operate effectively in a fractional, high\-impact capacity. 5\-10 years of relevant experience preferred.
What You’ll Own
- Job Costing Accuracy \& Consistency: Strengthen and standardize job costing practices to ensure reliable, decision\-ready financial data.
- WIP Reporting \& Revenue Recognition: Prepare and maintain quarterly WIP schedules, ensuring alignment with appropriate revenue recognition and accrual methodologies.
- General Ledger Oversight: Review GL structure, classifications, and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and consistency across reporting periods.
- Month\-End Close \& Accruals: Establish and enforce disciplined close processes, including proper accruals and cutoff.
- Financial Cleanup \& Optimization: Identify gaps, inconsistencies, or legacy issues and implement clean, scalable solutions.
- Team Leadership (Without Direct Replacement): Provide direction, coaching, and quality oversight to the existing bookkeeper—elevating output without disrupting continuity.
- Audit Readiness \& Documentation: Build documentation standards and controls to ensure the business is audit\-ready at all times.
- Process Design for Scale: Develop repeatable, efficient accounting processes that support continued growth and operational clarity.
Why This Role Is Different
- This is not a traditional complex construction accounting environment. Our model is intentionally streamlined:
- Service\-based (not heavy GC or multi\-layered construction)
- Minimal subcontractor complexity (primarily one)
- Billing is weekly or monthly based on completed services
- Limited long\-term, multi\-phase project accounting
- This allows you to focus on clarity, accuracy, and scalable systems—rather than navigating overly complex project structures.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong background in construction accounting
- Proven experience with:
- Job costing
- WIP reporting
- Accrual\-based accounting
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Experience with third‑party payroll integrations (including Miter QBO)
- Prevailing wage expertise (California)
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Identify gaps and implement improvements
- Build scalable accounting processes
- Operate independently in a fractional role
- Collaborative, low\-ego approach with the ability to support and elevate existing team members
- Bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- CPA or equivalent a plus, not required
What Success Looks Like
- Clean, accurate, and consistent financials
- Reliable job costing and WIP reporting
- A streamlined, repeatable close process
- A confident, supported bookkeeper operating at a higher level
- An accounting function that is ready for audit, scale, and leadership visibility
