OpenBeds is a digital platform designed to connect individuals in need of substance use treatment and sober living with providers who have real\-time bed availability. Our mission is to eliminate delays in access to care by creating an “on\-demand” experience for treatment placement—because in many cases, waiting can be the difference between life and death.
We are currently in the early stages, with a working prototype built on a no\-code platform, and are preparing to scale into a fully custom mobile and web application.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Fractional CTO to lead the technical vision and architecture of OpenBeds. This is a high\-impact leadership role responsible for transforming an early\-stage concept into a scalable, secure, and high\-performing platform.
The ideal candidate will act as both a strategic advisor and technical leader, guiding product decisions, establishing the technology stack, and overseeing development efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and lead the overall technical strategy and architecture
- Evaluate current prototype and recommend a scalable rebuild approach
- Select and justify the technology stack (frontend, backend, database, hosting)
- Design infrastructure for real\-time bed availability updates
- Ensure platform is built with security, privacy, and scalability in mind
- Oversee and assist in hiring developers or development teams
- Review code and development progress to ensure quality and alignment
- Collaborate on product roadmap and feature prioritization
- Advise on integrations (e.g., messaging, mapping, intake workflows)
- Establish best practices for deployment, testing, and maintenance
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience as a CTO, Lead Engineer, or Technical Architect (preferably in a startup environment)
- Strong background in full\-stack development
- Experience building marketplace platforms or real\-time systems
- Familiarity with mobile frameworks such as React Native or Flutter
- Backend experience with technologies such as Node.js, Firebase, or similar
- Understanding of HIPAA or healthcare\-related compliance (preferred but not required)
- Experience leading or mentoring development teams
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business strategy
Compensation
- Monthly Retainer: $2,000 – $10,000 (depending on experience and time commitment)
- Equity Option: 1% – 5% (negotiable based on involvement)
- Flexible structure based on availability and scope
