POSITION SUMMARY
The Interim Director of Production provides short-term operational and project-based leadership for the Wilshire Ebell Theatre during the Director of Production’s leave. This role focuses on day-to-day execution, production continuity, and event delivery, ensuring that scheduled performances, rentals, and internal programs are produced safely, smoothly, and in alignment with established standards.
The Interim Director’s primary responsibility is to keep productions moving forward, coordinate resources, and manage production projects already in progress.
The Ebell Theatre has over 1200 seats and is a nonunion workforce with five full-time staff and 60 part-time variable staff. Production types and schedules vary widely, and range from award ceremonies, book talks, concerts and dance, as few examples.
The Director of Production is the senior technical and operational leader of the Wilshire Ebell Theatre—a 1,238-seat historic performing arts venue supporting mission-driven programming, artistic partnerships, community events, rental clients, and women-centered content development. This role ensures the seamless execution of all productions and events while advancing long-term strategic upgrades to the theatre’s technical systems, safety practices, staff development, and client experience.
The Director of Production oversees daily theatre operations, manages and mentors the production team, develops production budgets, liaises with rental clients, collaborates with artistic and educational partners, and upholds the theatre’s high standards of guest experience, hospitality, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities: Production Management Duties
- Oversee all technical, logistical, and operational aspects of theatre productions, rentals, and internal events.
- Develop production strategies aligned with The Ebell’s artistic, community, and revenue goals.
- Strong production management experience with excellent client-facing leadership
- Champion inclusive, women-centered content aligned with The Ebell’s mission.
- Lead pre-production planning, technical coordination, schedules, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Maintain and operate the theatre’s audio, lighting, video, rigging, communications, and stage systems.
- Ensure the safety, readiness, and code of compliance with the theatre and backstage areas.
- Interface with all rental clients, performers, designers, and technical teams.
Qualifications
- At least 7 – 10 years of professional production management expertise or comparable experience.
- Ability to work independently and maintain a positive work atmosphere with a variety of teams and artists with diverse backgrounds.
- Experience with DANTE audio networking, Vectworks, SACN, audio gain structure, and rigging point loads is desirable.
- Has a strong grasp of OSHA basics, audio, lighting, video IMAG workflow, stage operations, and crowd management.
- Extensive experience managing crews and coordinating complex events.
- Proficiency in theatrical systems including lighting, audio, video, and rigging.
- Strong organization, budgeting, and project management skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
- Experience with historic venues preferred.
- Superior skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Deep understanding of the theater and dance making process.
Minimum Requirements-
· Knowledge of theatrical technical systems and production processes.
· Ability to read and create stage plots, line-set charts, and technical documents.
· Ability to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours.
· Ability to lift and move equipment safely.

Compensation: $45-50 per hour
Benefits (Full-time only):
This is a non-benefit eligible position. This position will accrue sick time in accordance with CA regulations.
