Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Public Relations Director, assist the Public Relations Director in performing professional public affairs duties to achieve the desired public image and communication system of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with PR Director in developing and defining innovative public relations strategies for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
  • Assist in defining and targeting audiences to build an awareness of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and to insure the tribe’s public relations vision is applied consistently.
  • Assist in developing briefings, documents, press kits, news releases, and department and Tribal Council correspondence.
  • Edit news releases, articles, speeches, and presentations prepared for Tribal Council or Tribal Operations departmental program staff.
  • Develop and maintain media contracts including print, online, digital and broadcasting media campaigns to establish and maintain a positive relationship for the tribe.
  • Update and maintain the tribe’s social media and online content.
  • Assist in coordinating media relations activities including briefings, interviews, press conferences, and internet presentations.
  • Gather and prepare pertinent information to be shared and communicated to the tribal membership.
  • Represent and communicate information to tribal departments as requested by Director
  • Provide in-house and external tours.
  • Act as liaison between the tribal membership and tribal government to provide information and address tribal member concerns as directed.
  • Uphold and implement the approved graphic standards.
  • Assist tribal programs promoting departmental and community activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Empowered to interact with all levels of personnel in order to communicate operational decisions.
  • Frequent contact with Tribal Council members, Executive Council, Administrative Staff, tribal members, outside members of the print and electronic media, and a wide range of community representatives to accomplish the objectives of the tribal organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communication or related field.
  • Three years’ experience in communications, public relations, multi-media or related work.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with people to communicate in a clear, concise and positive manner.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of public relations, promotions, and marketing in a customer service oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of journalism, public relations and general communications principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to create, evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate media activities and special events.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally sit, bend, climb and balance.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Normal office environment.

  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
