Controller / Director of Finance

Small Business \| DoD \& DHS Government Contractor

Location: Northern Virginia / Hybrid
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

Overview

We are a growing small business government contractor supporting the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeking a Controller / Director of Finance to lead day\-to\-day financial operations. This is a hands\-on role responsible for accounting, government contract billing, compliance, and financial reporting in a regulated environment. The position works closely with the CEO and external advisors and has a clear growth path as the company scales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close and reporting
  • Manage government contract accounting, billing, and revenue recognition
  • Ensure compliance with FAR, DFARS, HSAR, and DCAA requirements
  • Track and maintain indirect cost rates and support pricing activities
  • Support DCAA, DCMA, and DHS audits; maintain audit\-ready documentation
  • Manage AP/AR, payroll, and cash flow monitoring
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms, auditors, and fractional CFO support

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7\+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience
  • Government contracting experience required (DoD and/or DHS preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of FAR/DFARS and DCAA audit processes
  • Experience with government\-compliant accounting systems \- Deltek Costpoint
  • Hands\-on, detail\-oriented, and comfortable in a small business environment

Preferred

  • CPA or CMA certification
  • Experience supporting cost\-plus, T\&M, and fixed\-price contracts
  • Experience in a small business or high\-growth environment
