Description

The Kentucky Department of Parks is seeking an Administrative Specialist (Historical Researcher) to lead research on the history of enslavement at state park sites. This role will uncover, document, and interpret the lives and contributions of enslaved individuals to ensure inclusive, research-based storytelling. This is an Interim position at Butler-Turpin State Historic House at General Butler State Resort Park. An Interim position means a position established to address a one-time or recurring need of less than nine (9) months duration and exempt from the classified service under KRS 18A.115.
Key responsibilities:
- Conducting archival research using estate, census, property, and personal records.
- Developing accurate and accessible public content for exhibits, tours, and digital platforms.
- Collaborating with park staff and community partners to ensure historical integrity.
Preferred Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:
- Strong background in 19th-century history and archival research.
- Skilled in interpreting historical documents and translating findings for public audiences.
- Degree in History, Public History, African American Studies, or similar (Master’s preferred).
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of professional, administrative, or business experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional administrative, business, research, and/or clerical experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
